Băneasa vs. Otopeni: Which Pick-up Location Suits You

Published: octombrie 19, 2026 · Written by Razvan Mihai

Băneasa vs. Otopeni — locație de preluare

In short

  • If you arrive on a commercial flight, choose Otopeni (Henri Coandă).
  • Băneasa suits private and business aviation, or if you are already in the north of Bucharest.
  • The fleet and prices are identical at both locations.
  • You can also choose pick-up at a location in Bucharest, directly in the booking form.

In the online booking form, at the “pick-up location” step, you see three options: Bucharest, Otopeni and Băneasa. For most customers the choice is obvious: you land on a commercial flight, so you choose Otopeni. There are, however, less clear-cut cases: you arrive on a private flight, you already live in the north of the capital, or you simply don’t know what “Băneasa” means when it comes to car rental. It is not an airport that has disappeared from the map, as many people think, but an area with a very specific role.

In this article we go through the two locations one by one: what they are, who they are for, how far they are from the centre and from the ring road and, above all, how to choose the right one in less than two minutes. One important detail: the fleet and prices on the fleet page are the same whichever location you choose. With car hire Bucharest Otopeni the decision depends only on your logistics, not on your budget.

Otopeni (Henri Coandă): Romania’s main air gateway

Henri Coandă International Airport, popularly known as “Otopeni” after the town where it is located, is the only airport in the Bucharest area with regular commercial flights. This is where Wizz Air, TAROM, Ryanair, Lufthansa, Turkish Airlines and the other airlines you fly with on a city break or holiday land and take off. With more than 14 million passengers a year before the pandemic and steadily growing traffic since 2022, Otopeni is effectively the entry point for the vast majority of tourists and business travellers who reach Romania by plane.

The airport is about 16–17 km north of central Bucharest, on the DN1 (Bucharest–Ploiești road), with direct access to the capital’s ring road. From the arrivals terminal you reach the ring road in a few minutes, which makes Otopeni a convenient starting point both for those heading into the city and for those driving straight on to Ploiești, Brașov or the seaside without entering urban traffic.

In practical terms, picking up the car at Otopeni means meeting us at Arrivals, at the point agreed in the confirmation call you receive right after sending the online booking form. If you want details on the way from the terminal to the car, the best times and the mistakes first-time visitors often make, read our guide on how to rent a car at Henri Coandă Airport in 5 steps. You will find more information on the car rental Otopeni Airport page.

Băneasa: from Bucharest’s first airport to private aviation and the northern district

Few people know that Băneasa was the capital’s first civil airport: Aurel Vlaicu Airport, opened back in the interwar period and used as the city’s main airport until the 1970s, when commercial traffic gradually moved to Otopeni. Today Băneasa serves general aviation: private jets, charter flights, helicopters and the aero club’s planes. If you booked a flight with a business aviation operator or stepped off a private jet, you most likely landed here, not at Otopeni.

At the same time, “Băneasa” is also the name of a well-known area in the north of Bucharest: a residential district with villas and new developments, next to Băneasa Forest, the Bucharest–Ploiești road and the Băneasa Shopping City mall. Locals come here to shop, to run in the forest or for business meetings, and Herăstrău, Pipera and Aviației, districts with many company headquarters and office buildings, are just a few kilometres away.

In practice, if you already live or work in the north of the city (Pipera, Aviației, Herăstrău, Băneasa), picking up the car at our Băneasa location saves you real time, even if you did not land there. It is simply the closest location to your home or office.

Who should choose each location: 4 real situations

There is no absolutely “better” option, only the one that fits your situation. Here are the four cases we see most often in bookings:

  • You arrive on a commercial flight (Wizz Air, TAROM, Ryanair, Lufthansa, etc.): choose Otopeni, because that is where you actually land.
  • You travel by private jet, charter flight or business helicopter: choose Băneasa, the terminal dedicated to private aviation.
  • You live in or already have meetings in Pipera, Aviației, Herăstrău or Băneasa: choose Băneasa to save time, however you arrived in the city.
  • You need to meet someone right at the arrivals gate or need direct access to the airport terminal: Otopeni has commercial terminal infrastructure, while Băneasa is more of an airfield with restricted access.

Real distances to the centre and access to the ring road

The distance between the two locations is not huge, but it matters at rush hour. From Otopeni to Piața Universității it is about 16–18 km, covered in 25–40 minutes depending on traffic. From Băneasa, the same destination is only 9–11 km away, i.e. 15–25 minutes in normal conditions. The difference is felt mostly in the morning and late afternoon, when the Bucharest–Ploiești road is congested all the way from Otopeni.

As for the ring road, both locations have good access. Otopeni has its own exit straight onto the ring road, ideal if you are going on to Ploiești, Brașov or the A1/A3 motorways without entering the city at all. Băneasa is also a few minutes from the northern ring road, but it is more of a gateway into the city than to the motorways around Bucharest. If you plan to set off on a mountain route or to the seaside on day one, Otopeni may be slightly more practical. If you stay in the city at least the first night, the difference disappears.

The fleet and prices are the same, whatever the location

Whether you choose Otopeni, Băneasa or the location in central Bucharest, you have access to the same fleet of 9 models: from the economical Dacia Logan, Fiat Tipo and Seat Toledo to the Renault Megane, the Hyundai Kona compact SUV, the automatic Opel Astra, the 7-seat Opel Zafira and the mid-size Opel Insignia and Ford Mondeo. You can see all available options on the full fleet page.

The same goes for the price: the online booking system automatically calculates the rate for your dates and instantly shows the final price, with no deposit and no surcharge. The pick-up location does not change the final price at all. It only affects how conveniently you get to the car.

Not sure which to choose? Here is how to decide quickly

If you are torn between the two, the simple rule is this: for a regular commercial flight, choose Otopeni by default, as it is the right option in more than 90% of cases. Choose Băneasa only if you know for sure you are arriving by private or charter aviation, or if you already live or work in the north of the city and want the closest pick-up point.

If you still have doubts, don’t fill in the form at random. You can call our team directly before booking, and in any case, after sending your online booking request, you receive a confirmation call in which you can change the location without any problem if your plans have changed in the meantime.

A question we get often: can you pick up the car at one location and return it at another? For example, you collect it at Otopeni on arrival and return it at Băneasa before a private flight, or the other way round. The answer is yes. It is a common option and involves no extra formalities compared with a standard booking: enter the two locations in the form or tell us on the phone, and the team takes care of the rest. It is especially useful for those combining a holiday with a business trip and switching flight type on the way back.

Choose the right location — Bucharest, Otopeni or Băneasa — and complete the online booking form in less than two minutes. You see the final price, with no deposit, before you confirm anything. And if you want to compare the available cars first, take a look at our whole fleet and choose the right model for your route.
