- You need an ID card or passport and a driving licence held for at least 1 year.
Henri Coandă Airport, known as Otopeni, is Romania’s most important air gateway, for tourists and business travellers alike. Most of the country’s international passenger traffic passes through it, with direct flights from dozens of European cities and, in some seasons, from other continents. Imagine landing on Friday evening with a meeting in central Bucharest on Monday morning: a rental car is not a luxury but the fastest and most predictable option, far more flexible than a taxi ordered after a queue or a transfer at a fixed time.
This guide answers one single question: what happens, step by step, from the moment you book the car online until you drive away from the airport? You will learn how the booking works, how you meet the car in the arrivals area, which documents you need to have with you, which car class suits each type of trip and how long, in real figures, the drive to the city centre takes.
Why Otopeni is the main gateway to Bucharest
The airport opened in the 1970s under the name Otopeni and became Bucharest’s main international airport after the borders opened following 1990. In 2004 it was named after the engineer Henri Coandă. Over the last two decades the terminal has been extended in several stages to cope with traffic which, in the peak years before the pandemic, exceeded 14–15 million passengers a year. Today it is still by far the busiest airport in Romania, with dozens of daily flights operated by low-cost and traditional airlines.
For a tourist or business traveller, the practical conclusion is simple: if you fly to Bucharest, you will almost certainly land at Otopeni, not at Băneasa (used almost exclusively by private and business aviation) or another nearby airport. That is why most car rental companies, including ours, concentrate most of their fleet and availability here, and the booking process is designed for someone who steps off the plane with luggage in tow and, perhaps, tired from the journey.
Because traffic is concentrated at Otopeni, we have created a whole page for our service here, with opening hours, rates and contact details for the airport area: car rental Otopeni Airport. And if you also need a car in the city, our car rental Bucharest Otopeni service covers both pick-up points under the same conditions.
How to book the car before your flight, step by step
The whole process takes place online, with no extra trips and no long phone negotiations. First you choose the car from the available fleet: from a Dacia Logan or Fiat Tipo on a tight budget to an Opel Insignia or Ford Mondeo for a business trip. Then you set the period (the pick-up date and time, which should match your estimated landing time plus a safety margin) and the pick-up location, in this case Otopeni.
The system shows the final price straight away. At Închirieri Auto Otopeni all rentals are without a deposit: nothing is blocked on your card, Full CASCO insurance is included in the price and there is no surcharge for it. You fill in the booking form with your details and your flight details, and the booking is registered on the spot. You do not wait hours for confirmation from a support centre.
We recommend booking at least 24–48 hours before your flight, especially in summer or around long weekends. During these periods demand for certain classes (SUVs, automatic cars) can exceed supply, even for a single day.
The confirmation call: what happens after you send the form
After you send the form, someone from our team calls you, usually within a few hours during working hours, or at the latest the next day. The call is not a bureaucratic formality. We use it to confirm the actual landing time, check your flight number (especially useful if you have a stopover or are flying from outside Europe), agree on the exact meeting point at the airport and answer your questions about insurance, mileage or documents.
If your flight number changes or there is a delay, this is also the channel you use to let us know. That is why it is important to leave a phone number on which you can be reached from abroad. WhatsApp works very well for international travellers.
Arriving at Henri Coandă: the arrivals area and the meeting point
The Arrivals terminal is on the ground floor of the main building, below the Departures area. After the baggage belt and, if you are coming from outside the Schengen area, customs control, you exit into the public hall. There you will find drivers holding name signs, families waiting for relatives and representatives of transfer and rental companies.
The big international companies have their own desk in the terminal, but most local operators, including those with better prices, work with a fixed meeting point at the exit of the arrivals area or in the nearest short-stay car park, a few dozen metres from the doors. In practice, the driver waits for you with a sign bearing your name, takes you to the car, you check its condition together and sign the contract there. Normally it all takes 10–15 minutes.
The system may seem less „official” than a desk with an illuminated sign, but it is faster. You do not queue, you do not fill in papers in a crowded office, and the car is prepared and checked even before you land, because your arrival time was confirmed by phone.
Delayed flight or landing at night
Delays are the rule rather than the exception, especially in winter and on routes with a stopover. That is why we track the flight in real time and move the meeting time to the actual landing time, not the one on the ticket. You do not need to call us in a panic from the plane over a 40-minute delay.
If you land at night or very early in the morning, mention it in the form or during the confirmation call, so the driver is there whatever the time. Do not assume that a flight scheduled for 23:00 automatically means you will pick up the car before midnight: passport control, the baggage belt and a possible customs queue can easily add 30–60 minutes.
Which documents you need to have with you
The documents are the same for every car class, and it is better to check them at home rather than at the pick-up point. The standard age is 21 (drivers under 21 can rent with an additional insurance fee of €10 per day), and the licence must have been held for at least one year, a condition we check directly when handing over the car.
For the complete, up-to-date list, including special cases (recent licence, licence from outside the EU, second driver), read our article on the documents needed to rent a car in Romania. It is worth reading a few days before your trip, not in the arrivals hall.
- Valid ID card or passport (foreign citizens usually use their passport)
- Valid driving licence, held for at least 1 year
- No bank card needed for a deposit – rentals are without a deposit
- Booking details confirmed by phone (name, flight number, arrival time)
Which car class to choose, depending on the type of trip
If you are on holiday and driving around the city or heading to the seaside or the mountains, an Economy class car (Dacia Logan or Fiat Tipo) is enough: low fuel consumption and unlimited mileage, as with all our cars. If your budget allows a little more comfort, the Renault Megane is a good choice, and for those not used to a manual gearbox, still very common in rental cars in Romania, we have the Opel Astra automatic.
On business trips, when the impression you make at a meeting or when welcoming a partner matters, the natural choice is the Opel Insignia or Ford Mondeo: spacious, comfortable over long distances and discreet enough in a corporate context. Families with lots of luggage find a good balance between boot space and easy handling in the Seat Toledo (very large boot) or the compact SUV Hyundai Kona.
For larger groups, for example a team arriving on the same flight or an extended family, the Opel Zafira 7 seats saves you renting two cars, which means a lower total cost and simpler logistics at the airport. You can compare all the models directly on our site, with the final no-deposit price, in the full fleet.
From Otopeni to central Bucharest: distance, route and traffic
The airport is about 16–17 km north of central Bucharest. The main route follows the DN1 (the Bucharest–Ploiești road), through Otopeni and Băneasa, then enters the city on Șoseaua București-Ploiești towards Piața Presei Libere and Șoseaua Kiseleff. In normal traffic you get there in 25–35 minutes. At rush hour (7:30–9:30 in the morning and 17:00–19:30 in the evening) the drive can easily take 45–60 minutes, especially between Piața Presei Libere and the Arcul de Triumf.
If you land in the late afternoon, just before rush hour, it may be worth making a short stop for a coffee or a meal before heading into the traffic: on this route the difference can be 20–30 minutes. Navigation apps (Google Maps, Waze) are quite accurate here. Use them even if the route looks simple on the map, because the roundabouts at Băneasa and the entrance to the city sometimes get congested unexpectedly.
Băneasa, the option for private aviation
If your flight lands at Băneasa, used almost exclusively for private, business or charter aviation, the rental process is similar in principle, but the logistics and geography differ enough to deserve a separate discussion. Băneasa is closer to the centre (about 8–9 km), access traffic is usually lighter, and the meeting with the driver is usually arranged right at the general aviation terminal, not in the arrivals area of a commercial airport.
If you have to choose between the two airports or are organising the trip for several people arriving on different flights, read the comparison in our article Băneasa vs. Otopeni: which pick-up location suits you.
Common mistakes you can avoid
Almost all of them are easy to solve in advance: a booking made one or two days ahead, a correct phone number and a few minutes reading about deposit options eliminate most unpleasant surprises at the airport.
- Booking at the last minute, directly from the airport, without checking whether the car class you want is available
- Ignoring the confirmation call or giving a phone number on which you cannot be reached from abroad
- Not knowing the deposit conditions until you reach the car (with us no deposit is required)
- Underestimating the time between landing and leaving the terminal (luggage, customs, passport control)
- Driving into the city at rush hour without checking real-time traffic
If your flight lands at Henri Coandă, the simplest step is to book the car online now, choose the right class from the available fleet and leave the rest of the details (meeting point, documents, payment method) to the confirmation call, which comes automatically after you send the form. Your flight and luggage are enough to deal with on travel day; the airport car does not need to be added to the list.
