SUV or Sedan? How to Choose the Right Car for Your Trip
In short
- Choose the car based on the number of passengers, luggage and type of road, not on looks.
- For the city and short trips, a compact car uses less fuel and is easier to park.
- For the mountains, winter or secondary roads, a compact SUV offers higher ground clearance and better visibility.
- For large groups, a 7-seat MPV is cheaper than two cars.
When you have our fleet of 9 models in front of you and need to decide quickly, the temptation is to choose on reflex: “an SUV, it seems safer” or “the cheapest one, I won’t be in the car much anyway”. Both can go wrong. An SUV for a two-day city break in Bucharest means higher fuel consumption, a car that is hard to park in the narrow streets around the Old Town and a daily cost the route doesn’t justify. Likewise, an economy car taken by four adults with a week’s luggage heading to the mountains means a crammed boot, knees against the dashboard and a small engine that struggles on the first serious climb of the Prahova Valley.
A successful rental doesn’t depend on the badge on the bonnet, but on how well the car matches the road you have to drive. Below you will find the decision framework we use ourselves on the phone when a customer hesitates between two classes, plus an overview of every model in the fleet. That way you find out beforehand, not after you set off, whether you need a sedan, an SUV or something else.
Four questions to ask before you open the list of cars
How many people will be in the car? Count the passengers for each day of the trip, not just for the day you set off. A couple going to the seaside in summer doesn’t have the same needs as four colleagues heading to a weekend training in Sinaia, and a family with two young children and car seats takes up much more space than four adults without luggage. The number of seats matters less than the real space left once everyone and everything is on board.
How big is your luggage? Not the number of suitcases, but the volume. Two cabin bags fit easily in an economy car’s boot, but two 23 kg suitcases plus a ski bag and a backpack with camera gear will not, however hard you push. If you have bulky equipment (skis, bikes, a double pushchair, materials for a trade fair or exhibition), it weighs more in the decision than the number of passengers.
What kind of road will you drive? A weekend spent only in Bucharest, with underground car parks and city-centre traffic, favours a compact, easy-to-manoeuvre car. A route to the mountains, with hairpin bends, secondary roads to mountain huts or unpaved stretches in the Bran-Moeciu area, calls for the higher ground clearance of an SUV. Don’t confuse the drive from the airport to the hotel with the whole holiday: many customers choose the car based on the first 20 kilometres and regret it in Predeal.
What is the budget, compared with the comfort you need? In the online booking you instantly see the final price of each car, always with no deposit, and the difference between classes is clear, per day. Ask yourself honestly whether you are paying for a larger car for comfort or just for the image you want to project at a business meeting. Both reasons are valid, but the budget should match the real reason.
- Count the passengers for each day of the route, not just at departure
- Estimate the volume of your luggage, not just the number of bags
- Check whether the route includes mountain roads
- Compare the final daily price of neighbouring classes before choosing (all rentals are without deposit)
- Choose a gearbox you feel confident with, not one you want to practise on
Model by model: who each car in the fleet suits
All the cars below are available with car rental Bucharest Otopeni, with no deposit, Full CASCO comprehensive insurance included and unlimited kilometres.
Dacia Logan and Fiat Tipo (economy). The right choice for city driving, short trips between Bucharest and nearby towns, or for anyone travelling alone or as a couple who wants the lowest daily cost in the fleet, from €28 per day for 1–3 days and down to €15 per day for long rentals. They are easy to park in Cotroceni or Dorobanți, use little fuel in traffic and handle a drive to Ploiești or Târgoviște well. The Fiat Tipo, a compact sedan, offers a little more room for the same price.
Seat Toledo (large boot). It combines the practicality of a hatchback with the space of a sedan. With a very large boot, it is an excellent choice if you arrive with lots of luggage or set off on a long drive, while keeping the price of the economy class.
Renault Megane (compact). The middle ground for those who want more comfort than an economy car without going up to a mid-size sedan. Easy to drive in the city, but comfortable enough for trips of a few hundred kilometres.
Opel Astra automatic. The only automatic car in the fleet, with an economical diesel engine. The automatic gearbox spares you constant gear changes in heavy traffic, and the diesel keeps consumption low on long drives such as Bucharest–Sibiu or Bucharest–Constanța. It is also the natural choice for anyone used only to automatics.
Opel Insignia (mid-size). Long and comfortable, it is made for business trips and long drives across the country: meetings with partners, a visit to a client in another city or simply arriving relaxed, with low engine noise and a generous boot.
Ford Mondeo (large, diesel). Big and comfortable, with an economical diesel engine, built for long distances. If you have hundreds of kilometres to drive or want to do a tour of Romania, the Mondeo gives you space, stability and low fuel consumption.
Hyundai Kona (compact SUV). We recommend it for mixed routes: some city, some county roads, perhaps a short forest track to a cabin or guesthouse. The higher driving position improves visibility, the extra ground clearance makes a difference on gravel or packed snow, and its compact size keeps it easy to park in town.
Opel Zafira 7 seats. The only 7-seater in the fleet, it solves the group problem: an extended family, friends heading to the mountains together or a small team travelling to an event. Instead of renting two cars, you all travel together, with one driver and one cost.
Manual or automatic? What to know if you are not used to a gear stick
Most cars in the fleet have a manual gearbox, which is normal for the Romanian and European market, where manual remains standard even in mid-range cars. For a driver used to manual, there is no problem. For a visitor from a market where automatic is the rule (the United States, many Asian countries), it is a different story, especially if the last time you drove a manual was at driving school.
If you haven’t driven a manual recently or simply want to reduce stress in an unfamiliar city, the automatic Opel Astra is a safe choice for any route, from the Otopeni–centre drive to a few hundred kilometres to the seaside or the mountains. The transmission type is shown for every car on the fleet page, so you can quickly rule out the options that don’t suit you before you reach the booking form.
A practical detail for those who still choose manual: traffic in Bucharest, especially on Șoseaua Kiseleff, in Piața Victoriei or on Calea Floreasca at rush hour, means frequent gear changes. If you are not comfortable with that, choosing the automatic easily pays for itself in the stress you avoid during your first hour behind the wheel in a new city.
Mountain roads or winter conditions: what really matters
The classic Bucharest–Brașov route, on the DN1 via Ploiești, Sinaia, Bușteni and Predeal, or on the A3 motorway combined with the DN1 for the mountain section, climbs more than 900 metres in less than 120 kilometres. The hairpin bends at Posada, the curves between Bușteni and Predeal and heavy traffic on Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons are realities every driver must take into account, whatever the car.
On these roads, especially between November and March, a compact SUV such as the Hyundai Kona offers a real advantage: higher ground clearance, better grip on packed snow and a driving position that helps visibility in fog, which is frequent early in the morning between Comarnic and Bușteni. A sedan or an economy car is not unsuitable if the roads are cleared, but it becomes a disadvantage in heavy snow or on untreated secondary roads, like many of those to the chalets in Poiana Brașov or Bran.
All cars in the fleet include third-party liability and Full CASCO comprehensive insurance, whatever the season or destination, so insurance is not an extra worry on the mountain road. It is still up to you to adapt your speed to the conditions and, if heavy snow is forecast, to choose a car with higher ground clearance when you book, not to improvise at the last minute when you pick it up through car rental Otopeni Airport or in Băneasa.
Neither too much nor too little: the most common sizing mistake
The most common “too much” mistake is choosing a large car or an SUV for one person or a couple without bulky luggage, usually out of caution or a wish for maximum comfort, “just to be safe”. The result: a higher daily cost, higher fuel consumption and, in Bucharest, a car that is harder to park in the centre or in the old districts with narrow spaces.
The opposite “too little” mistake happens when four or five people with a week’s luggage choose an economy car just because the daily price is low. Over a week, the difference between an economy car and a compact SUV is often less than an extra baggage fee on the plane, but the discomfort in the car stays with you every day of the holiday. A badly calculated price, paid with your knees against the dashboard.
Our advice: choose the class for the most loaded scenario of the trip, not the lightest. If on most days there are two of you but on one day a third colleague with luggage joins, choose for three. And since all our rentals are without a deposit, simply compare the final daily price of neighbouring classes before you decide.
If you are torn between a sedan and an SUV, the easiest thing is to open the full fleet, compare the cars side by side with the daily price shown for your dates, and then fill in the online booking form. You instantly see the final price, with no deposit, and after sending it you soon get a confirmation call. All our rental cars Otopeni Airport are handed over at Arrivals, 24/7. A compact SUV has higher ground clearance and a higher driving position, useful on mountain roads. For motorways and long drives, a sedan is often more comfortable and more economical.
Which car should I choose for 4 adults with luggage?
For 4 adults with a week’s luggage we recommend a mid-size sedan or a model with a large boot, such as the Seat Toledo, Opel Insignia or Ford Mondeo.
Is an automatic worth it if I have never driven one?
Yes. Automatic cars are very easy to drive and much more relaxing in Bucharest traffic.
October 2026 update: for mountain roads in autumn and winter, an SUV offers higher ground clearance, while for the city and motorways a sedan is usually more economical. Tell us your route and we will recommend the right class.
